Seb Big Band has been a cornerstone of Ballarat’s music scene for almost 50 years, dedicated to keeping big-band jazz alive in regional Victoria.

Originally formed in 1979 as Sebaclear Stage Band, the group provided musical opportunities for students of Mt Clear Secondary College and Sebastopol Technical College before evolving into a community ensemble in the 1980s and 1990s. Over the years, the band has toured interstate and internationally, including visits to Hawaii and New Zealand.

Today, the band combines semi-professional musicians, music teachers, community players, and emerging high school talent, maintaining the strong school and community roots on which it was founded.

Under the expert musical direction of Scott Mangos, this versatile 19-piece ensemble will present a program of jazz standards, swing classics, and contemporary big-band arrangements, featuring a powerful horn section, lively rhythm section, dynamic vocals, and special solo performances by Joshua Hyde.

Having previously performed with Seb Big Band before establishing an international music career, Joshua Hyde returns to Ballarat for a special performance celebrating the vibrant local music scene that helped shape his journey. A former Seb Big Band member, Joshua Hyde is now globally recognised as one of the leading saxophonists of his generation, interpreting music from the renaissance through to the most extreme and experimental new music of today. He is also a pianist, composer, and improviser, and is professor of saxophone and chamber music at the Geneva University of Music.

The concert will be presented in the historic Main Hall of Ballarat Performing Arts Centre.

Seb Big Band promises an uplifting evening of live music and community spirit. Whether you’re a big band enthusiast, a Joshua Hyde fan, or simply love supporting local live music, this is a night not to be missed.
